Scaling

Well this week we learned about several of the different scalers that are used to actually scale the debris off teeth. There are several different criterion used for identification and differentiation. There are sickles, curettes, and universal scalers all of which can be further classified by the rigidity, length, and complexity of their shanks. We started with the anterior scalers which have light, simple, and short shanks because the anterior teeth are easy to access and adapt to. It is important to maintain lateral pressure against the tooth while scaling. This is difficult to do with anterior teeth because they are so small, the scaler just slips right off sometimes. That is why fulcrums are so important (stay "up" on the fulcrum).
On a personal note!! I went to Washington (the state) this weekend for the first time ever and had such a good time there. I got to see all of the sights in beautiful Seattle and spend some quality time with people I love!! It was a great weekend.
