Today I saw my class 4 patient for another quad and to finish up some areas I had missed on the last quad. When Kami and I were reveiwing the areas I had missed I was asking her which instruments she would use on the anteriors which had really deep pocketing. I was suprised when sh told me she would just use her ultrasonic. She also told me that when she has a patient like this she actually changes her positioning just as she would if she were scaling (whereas I would have stayed at 12 o'clock on all the anteriors with the ultrasonic). So I used my slim tip and moved to 8 o'clock for the surfaces away from me and to my amazement I was able to get most all of the deposit with my ultrasonic and just a few strokes of an instrument.
So, I learned today that sometimes you can do more than expected with the ultrasonic and not to be afraid to try it out. If your patient is exceptionally difficult try sitting the same positions you would if you were scaling.

I love the ultrasonic. I couldn't be a hygienist without it, no joke. I use it on everyone except 1B's because the ones I have used it on have complained of sensitivity. So far this concept has worked great for me.
