Oral Hygiene Instruction

My patient for this morning no showed. Which was a first for me! I ended up getting a nice 1B to come in though. He was a very interesting patient because he uses a lot of natural herbs and medicaments so I got to learn about the affects of some of those. I am very open to alternative medicine and love to learn more about it. He was really healthy though and had great OSC so something must be working right!
This afternoon I saw a Class III patient who smokes about 1/2-1 packs a day. I was lucky enough to meet him and get x-rays before his appt so I knew what I was in for. I looked for some literature to give him about periodontal disease and smoking...there was a ton of literature on smoking cessation but I had a hard time finding educational material that explained perio and how smoking effects the condition. I did end up finding an easy to read yet informational report on the ADHA website so I printed it out and gave it to him. I will follow up with that at his next appt. I hope he really considers the info!
